Google yourself And Look At What Keywords Describe You

by Infinity Concepts | May 3, 2012 | Digital

When you want to find something online, you “Google” it.

But have you ever Googled your own business or non-profit to see how easy you are to find?   I’m not talking about putting your NAME into Google. No one who doesn’t already know you will use your NAME to search for you, unless you sell toys and your name is Toys “R” Us.

I’m talking about the “keywords” that people use when they are looking for what you provide.

For instance, if you were looking for a speaker on a very narrow topic for a medical convention, you might put “medical convention lobotomy speaker.” (It could happen!)   If, on the other hand, you were looking for an inspirational speaker to close out the convention and encourage your members to get more involved in the coming year, you might put “ medical convention motivational speaker” and “keynote” or “inspiration.”

Now put yourself in the two different speakers’ shoes. Both would use keywords like “medical,” “convention,” and “speaker,” but the former would want to include words like “surgery,” “lobotomy,” and “research” while the latter would be more likely to get booked for that big convention by using words like “motivational speaker,” “inspirational speaker,” and “keynote.”

Both speakers could also list the states where they are willing to travel (Google knows where you are searching from), and “medical,” “doctor,” and “nurse,” as well as a host of other terms.

With more than a billion people active online and looking for the goods and services you provide, unless you are taking steps to optimize your website for appropriate keywords, people are finding your competition. And that is VERY costly.

There are several free search optimization keyword graders available, and most are associated with a product or service for sale. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, since learning to do SEO optimization on your own can take some time. Either way, every journey begins with a single step.

What attempts have you made to improve your SEO? What tools are you using to measure your progress?
