The ability (or the lack-there-of) to write and communicate appropriately is becoming far too much of a societal norm. We live in a time where technology on devices will autocorrect mistakes made before you can even comprehend that you made the mistake in the first place.

Whether you’re creating a donor letter, an advertising campaign, designing website content, speaking to the media, or even writing an article; written communication will always play a vital role in developing your brand, no matter what age we are living in. I believe it is important to step back and ask why there has been such a negative shift away from such crucial skills.

The Downward Shift

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES), 17% of all college freshman are taking remedial writing and language courses because they are attending university lacking the necessary communication skills required to succeed. What is less commonly known is that because that 17% needs remedial courses, we as taxpayers are spending an excess of $1 billion dollars to cover the cost of those courses nationwide.

Sadly, the problem does not end there. According to a study conducted on employers, 28% of college graduates were deficient in ALL written and oral communications, having trouble fulfilling basic job duties. Today, employers are spending over $3 billion for new employees to go through remedial training to perform adequately at their jobs.

What’s A Person To Do?

It is no surprise to find out that corporate executives are at the top of the list when it comes to being excellent verbal and written communicators. This should be a key insight into where our attention needs to be focused. Everything done within the workplace, no matter the task assigned, will involve communicating information with a high level of proficiency.

To be truly effective in our media saturated society you need to speak well, write effectively, listen to others, present well, sell ideas, and negotiate effectively. If you can communicate well, you are on your way. Communication will ALWAYS be the key to your success.
