Good design is about effective communication,
not decoration at the expense of legibility.

How much value does your business put on good design? It’s a question that seems simple enough, but have you really given it thought? Have you thought about it lately?
Good design, whether digital or print, gives your business the ability to stand out from your competitors, and gives you valuable leverage in the marketplace. Design is an investment for your success. Although there are countless reasons I could give, for the sake of time, I’ll only list three tried, tested, and proven reasons good design will benefit your business or cause:
- Good design gives your brand a memorable appeal.
What typically makes a brand memorable? A good product or service is an obvious answer. Good customer service? You’re on the right path. If you said good design, as well — go to the head of the class.
Have you ever experienced a time when you were trying to remember the name of a particular brand or product, but you could describe the picture of it in your mind? That power of recall is largely based on visual cues. Color, in particular plays a huge role in what we remember and how clearly we remember it. Studies have shown that colors can boost memory performance, so by using color as a way to make your brand distinct can ensure it stays memorable and recognizable.
- Good design gives your audience a reason to trust you.
When was the last time you encountered a website that failed to make a good impression? Did you immediately click away? I’ve encountered more than my share of shockingly bad web designs and have often wondered what state that business might be in! You can avoid taking that path. If your website looks as cluttered as your junk drawer, take action.
An overwhelming reason people reject a business or a brand is because the website lacked responsive design. Busy layouts, boring design, annoying pop-up ads all attribute to poor design, and can often cause mistrust and ultimately rejection. If you’re unsure about what to do, look at other successful sites and compare them to your own to get a sense of what needs to be changed.
- Good design ensures you reach your target market.
Think back to when you started your business. You worked diligently to do your research about what and who your target audience would be. But targeting this market can be tricky.
A bit of intentional design can not only discipline you to stay on message while making your product more appealing and drive sales, but it forces you to dig deeper and learn more about your audience and what matters to them. Paying attention to trends will help your brand stay fresh and competitive.
Bringing your A-game with good design doesn’t have to be hard. With a bit of research, TLC, and a proactive stance towards improvement, you’ll be glad you made the investment.
