Define Your Processes as Your Business Grows

by Liane Palaschak | May 5, 2023 | Productivity

Processes are an important part of growing your business, ministry, or nonprofit. Businesses of all sizes run on processes, whether they are defined or not. However, a great business leader takes the time to develop and consistently improve processes. A good set of processes not only helps your employees know what is expected, but they affect how your customers view your organization, leading to a better profit for you!

Finding a good set of ever-changing processes will ensure your business grows effectively.

Where do you start?

  1. Define your current issues and identify your goals. If you are defining processes for your business, you probably have a good gauge on what works and what does not. Now it is time to brainstorm and outline steps of what is currently working and identify measurable goals.
  2. Identify the best person or team to implement the processes. Not all the time, but most times, entrepreneurs are visionaries. They have a great concept to build a business that impacts a community, makes a difference, or transforms an industry. However, when it comes to processes, they may be wiser to pass the job along to an employee who is more procedural-minded.
  3. Start your plan and create a common language. Now is the time to start to write it all down. It is important to have a set of standard procedures for each role in your company. Everyone in your organization needs to be on the same page. You must create a common language so that anyone in your organization can clearly understand the expectations of a task.

Outlining each step in a process helps you to define when a mistake happens. This provides you the opportunity to make the necessary changes to ensure it doesn’t happen again. You should always be adding and improving steps as you continue to grow.

  4. Implement the process. Once you determine a clear flow of processes, now is the time to implement them. Share your procedures with everyone on your team and train them. You must clearly explain the purpose and importance of the processes to your team. Ask for feedback, and truly listen to your employees. After all, they are the ones doing the job day in and day out.
  5. Revise and update often. As your business grows, so should your processes. You should be consistently looking at valuable ways to improve your processes.

Defining a clear set of processes can feel daunting but the benefits far outweigh the task at hand. Not only are you increasing the quality of your business as it grows, but you are improving your customers’ experience and saving yourself lots of time and money in the future.
