Opening the Digital Doors: Social Media Strategies for First-Time Church Users

by Caitlin Curry | May 2, 2025 | Church Growth, Digital, Social Media

You do not need to be a social media guru to start using these platforms well.

For many churches, especially smaller ones, social media can feel overwhelming or maybe even unnecessary. Maybe your ministry has thrived for years without Facebook or Instagram. But here is the reality: people are online. If your church is not showing up there, you are missing real opportunities to reach people where they already are.

Let us break down how to start building your social media presence—even if you have never posted a single story.

Start With Why

Before choosing a platform or crafting a post, ask: what are we hoping to accomplish?

For most churches, the answer is simple:

  • Invite more people into your congregation
  • Share the gospel with your community
  • Keep your people connected and informed
  • Encourage generosity through giving

These goals shape the kind of content you will post. And do not worry—this does not mean daily updates or a full-blown marketing plan. Small, consistent steps are often enough to make a big difference.

Pick One Platform

You do not need to be on five different platforms. Start with one—Facebook is often the easiest for churches, especially if your audience includes older generations.

You can expand to Instagram or even TikTok later, but focus on learning one platform first. Post updates about services, events, and encouraging scripture. Highlight volunteer stories. Use what you already have—YOUR people, YOUR sermons, YOUR values.

Use Your Voice, Not a Script

Church social media is not about having the flashiest graphics. It is about being real.

People are drawn to authenticity. Instead of worrying about perfect images or being hyper-focused on what another church in the area is doing, share things like:

  • A behind-the-scenes look at setting up Sunday service
  • A quote from the pastor’s message
  • A video of your worship team practicing
  • A short “thank you” to your volunteers

Small moments help people feel like they are part of something—and that is what builds community.

Think Local

Most of your online audience will live nearby. Use your page to invite them to something.

Post about:

  • Events (Easter services, food drives, youth nights)
  • Community involvement (supporting local schools or shelters)
  • Ways people can ask for prayer or get help

Social media is a front door. Treat every post like a friendly “hello” to someone who might be considering walking through yours.

Encourage Giving (Without Being Pushy)

Social media can support your church’s financial health too—but the key is connection first, ask second. Do not lead with “Give Now.” Instead, tell stories that show how giving makes a difference. For example:

  • “Because of your generosity, we provided 100 backpacks for local kids.”
  • “Your tithes helped keep our doors open during a tough season.”

Then, offer a simple link or QR code so people know where to go if they feel led to give. This is also an opportunity to remind members who may have been out to give their normal tithes. Make it easy!

Ask for Help (Really)

Do not try to do this all alone. Identify someone in your church who knows the basics of social media. Maybe it is a college student or a parent who runs a family blog. Equip them with the “why” and let them help with the “how.”

Remember, social media is not about chasing trends. It is about opening your church to more people. With a little strategy and a lot of heart, you can make a big impact—even if you are just getting started.
