Most ministries are constantly on the hunt to build strong volunteer teams within their organizations to help keep their missional objectives and activities running like well-oiled machines. But finding the right people for specific roles and teams for your ministry is easier said than done. So where do you even begin?
Here are a few simple ways you can recruit for volunteer teams within your organization:
- Set up one-on-one “meetings.” Chances are, as a leader in your ministry, you already know of people within your organization or community who would be good candidates for your volunteer teams. Sometimes, simply sending them a text message or a phone call for a quick chat can go a long way. Rather than having it be a formal meeting, invite them to meet you for coffee or a meal. Mention that you have some exciting opportunities to share and want them to be part of, instead of making it feel like a sales pitch.
- Connect with people who have been impacted by your ministry. Seeking out people who have been influenced by your ministry is another way you can source potential volunteers. These are people who already have a positive relationship with your ministry and can be brand advocates for your mission.
- Social Media. What better way to share opportunities than to highlight reels and graphics on social media about volunteer positions in your ministry? No team is too small to promote. If you need volunteers, share that need! Be sure to couple the “ask” with how volunteering will tangibly benefit your ministry’s efforts to reach your community and the globe.
- Referrals. If you have relationships with individual members on staff within your organization, they may also know of others who would be valuable assets to your volunteer teams. Reach out and ask them to refer people they recommend.
- Meet and greets. Set up informational tables/booths during community fairs, events, and gatherings so people can see all of the practical ways they can serve your organization. Think job fair, but for ministry volunteers. Keep it fun and interactive!
Building strong volunteer teams should not be a hassle. You will find that sometimes a simple ask can go a long way!
