What is public relations at its heart? Is it a finely crafted press release that accurately and compellingly shares your story with the media? Is it a fundraising event that draws big names and big donors? How about the perfect strategic blend of content and video shared online and over social media?
Each one of these is a stream that represents an effective public relations campaign that raises awareness and draws more potential supporters to your ministry or nonprofit.
But none of these represent the heart of public relations.
These initiatives can be effective means of reaching out to people about your organization. But they do not reflect the core motivation that should guide and direct PR. The heart that should reflect your public relations efforts is servanthood.
I’m reminded of Jesus’ comments in John 10, where he talks about the difference between a shepherd and a hired hand. The contrast that Jesus draws is stark—the shepherd will offer up his life to protect and provide for the sheep (John 10:11), while the person hired to care for the sheep will run at a hint of trouble because he does not really care about the sheep (John 10:13).
Without actually offering their life for the sake of your cause, how can you tell the difference between a PR hired hand and a PR servant?
The PR hired hand may be able to function well within the technical aspects of the role: They may be able to craft a powerful press release, pitch your story, and have an impressive list of press contacts on their mobile.
But the person with a servant’s heart will show up. The servant-hearted PR professional will do more than produce press releases and media hits. This person not only shares stories but is a guardian of the story and the values of your organization. Such an individual goes the extra mile to ensure those core messages are correctly shared in every media opportunity.
You see it in the details.
They ensure your website is included in coverage—and follow up if it’s wrong.
They listen to interviews and offer thoughtful feedback to strengthen your spokespeople.
They follow up with media contacts to clarify facts, even small ones like name pronunciation.
They maintain relationships with reporters, not just for placement, but for trust.
They track what works, learn from what does not, and adjust accordingly.
They persevere to secure that sought-after interview.
They celebrate the victories and evaluate how to grow through setbacks.
None of this is glamorous. All of it matters.
This kind of public relations professional is more than a service provider; this person is a committed partner mindful of your reputation and seeking the success of your ministry or nonprofit.
A PR servant knows that every communication represents you, and they approach every email, text message, phone call, and press pitch with that kind of mindset. They put you in the spotlight, not themselves.
You are the hero.
Your ministry should be featured because your work is invaluable, crucial, and important. It is not about them, how well they write, or how convincing they are. They are sold out because it is an honor to serve you.
